Milder and slightly sweeter than its peanut-based counterpart, almond butter has become a breakfast-time staple — whether it’s spread on toast, stirred into porridge or drizzled over yoghurt. My favourite way to eat it is on a bagel, topped with sliced banana, though I love the sound of Bettina Campolucci Bordi’s French toast and berries with almond butter. All these butters are smooth and palm oil-free.

After a big stir, this almond butter is thick and glossy. It has a pleasant saltiness and is not cloying.

Tesco, 160g, £4
Definitely the most savoury of the lot thanks to a generous pinch of salt. It’s thick and feels indulgent.
Biona Organic

Ocado, 170g, £6.90
Earthy, nutty and extremely creamy, but at that price I’d spread sparingly.

Tesco, 170g, £3.25
There’s a slight bitterness here that I’m not sure about. However, it’s not too oily and is very, very moreish.
Yumello

Ocado, 215g, £5
Not everyone will like this. It’s oily and on the saltier side compared with the rest of the jars we tried. But it’s smooth, silky and pairs perfectly with sweet or savoury breakfasts.

Ocado, 227g, £3.50
The thinnest of the lot, and it doesn’t taste as nutty as the others. But this is fine spread on toast or swirled into porridge.
